I created this video for the Alto-Shaam website. I combined 3D graphics, product video, time-lapse food photography, special effects, and compositing all with Blender and After Effects. At the time, I was an Art Director for Ascedia. This Received a 2015 Communicator Awards - Gold Award of Excellence. The video was largely a solo effort and the client was a dream-come-true, in providing resources, thoughtful direction and making the photography and video shoots a breeze. This was made for the background of their website to cue the movie based on scroll behavior. This is a screen capture of the tablet web experience from this page of Alto-Shaam's website: .
In addition to positive client and user responses, early analytics reflect impressive user engagement and conversion results. Average session duration increased 142%. Bounce rate decreased 64%. Conversion goal rate increased 30%.
One of my favorite clients wanted a television ad that would promote the new Madison AJ Bombers location. He wanted it dually targeted at families and the football game crowd. The majority of the footage I received wasn't up to the quality I wanted to deliver, and reshooting wasn't an option. Through extensive use of rotoscoping, I was able to place people in different scenes than they were originally shot in. Years later I modified the same commercial to play on the Miller Park scoreboard during Brewers games.
It was decided that Ascedia needed a video to coincide with the Christmas cookies that were being sent to some of their clients (while still appealing to the clients that didn’t receive cookies). I had a short deadline to produce something that met these requirements. The concept was a group effort. I directed the shoot and executed all the post-production work.
Aqueon wanted an updated video that taught people how to take care of their aquarium. Their target audience is kids and moms. Using a beta version of Character Animator, I rigged up a "puppet" fish to track with my face to preform the facial animations. I used a combination of my own illustrations and stock illustrations, to make the 3D environment out of 2D planes in After Effects.
I was tasked to show an overview of what the Wisconsin Department of Tourism did on their website and in the individual videos they outsourced for an award submission. I recorded the screen captures and shot the scenes of the people viewing the website on a computer, tablet, and phone.
Our client wanted a promotional video for a board game that was still in development. The only thing provided for the video was a logo, a game scenario, and 5 illustrations. I wrote a symphonic soundtrack to aid in the feeling of adventure and excitement. I achieved the look mostly with a subtle use of puppet tool animation, lighting effects, and cut out planes in 3d space. Even though the game never made it to market, everyone was pleased with the end result.
GE Healthcare wanted to promote the fact that they have a dedicated training center that GE technicians visit for ongoing education. They wanted an engaging experience that would work within their site and supported platforms. The building itself wasn’t attractive, so I used the schematic and modeled the building in 3D. Using Edge Animate, I built out the entire interactive experience, then led the effort to integrate it into GE’s Sitecore environment.
A coworker and I collaborated to make a company holiday video featuring a cutout animation of a dancing robot with an 80’s influenced electronic soundtrack. Projects like this make me love my job even more than I usually do.
When Flash and Flex were still the standard for rich media experiences on the web, another programmer and myself carried this project to completion. American Girl needed an e-commerce experience where dolls and accessories could be visually customized. Because of the complexity of the project, along with ActionScript 3 and the Flex framework, we used RobotLegs (an MVC framework), Scene7 to serve the images and GreenSock TweenMax for the animations. I learned a lot on this project and spent many nights and weekends saturated in object oriented code. Proof of it’s success is that it’s still in use today.
Though I designed a significant portion, this was a real team effort, and it turned out to be something we were all proud of. I worked closely with another designer, the development team, and the client. Even the account manager had valuable creative input.
This is a web application I designed to display commute times. Though it didn’t take long, I’m pleased with how it turned out. It features a simple, flat, responsive grid design for Bootstrap.
Masterlock wanted an infographic made about online security that presented a need for secure passwords and ultimately promoted the MasterLock Vault. The analogy required a vault with many doors. A stock photo that fit these requirements was nowhere to be found. My solution was to model and texture the vault image from scratch in Blender, then overlay the vector graphics and text in Illustrator.
Masterlock Vault is a responsive website, iOS and Android application developed to securely store passwords, combinations, reminders and documents. I contributed much to the Design, UX, and Illustrations that make up the Masterlock Vault experience.
Analytics revealed that the majority of mobile users were trying to find doctors and facilities. Careful attention to UX and site goals led to a streamlined design that produced a large amount of inbound traffic and patient recruitment.
Our client’s local gym needed a face in the form of a brand. My objectives were to make his gym look professional, energetic, and a place for personal improvement. I designed the logo, signs, promotional print pieces, business cards and even how the walls were painted.
This was one of the first Google Glass apps to hit the market. The interesting part of this project was designing for a brand new platform and adhering to the specifications of a sparsely documented process.
The Wisconsin Department of Tourism wanted an iOS app to map color conditions across the state. A custom google map integration was one of the UX components that made this a successful app.
This was a design I made years ago that never made it to production. Still, there is something I enjoy about it. Perhaps it’s the cape.
"Roll Mobile" was rebranded to "Roll Innovation” shortly before it’s absorption into it’s parent company, Ascedia. I designed the logo, cards, promotional materials, and website.
